CR Council moves ahead on smoking ban

The Cedar Rapids City Council has taken the first step toward restricting smoking in city parks.

The plan would ban smoking within 30 feet of places where children gather, like playgrounds, golf clubhouses and recreation centers. The city said the goal is to curb secondhand smoking for kids. The ban doesn't include the use of chewing tobacco or e-cigarettes.

The city council needs to approve the ordinance two more times. That should happen at the December 18 council meeting.
