A Cedar Rapids woman has been charged with two counts of first-degree arson after fires in October 2018 and October 2017.
Court documents filed November 12 allege Carolyn Mittman, from Cedar Rapids, lit carpet in a bedroom closet on fire at 4333 1st Avenue SW #103 on October 22 in Cedar Rapids.
Documents also allege Mittman caused a fire at 5259 Johnson Avenue SW in Cedar Rapids on October 13, 2017, in Cedar Rapids. Siding on the building was damaged in that fire.
In the 1st Avenue Fire, documents say the multi-unit apartment building fire began near a box of matches, newspaper, and clothing. Mittman told authorities during questioning she started the fire to collect insurance money.
Mittman also admitted she started the fire at her previous home on Johnson Avenue to collect insurance money.
