A man was charged for his alleged role in a hit-and-run accident north of Colesburg in late October.
Travis Fangmann, 25, of Colesburg, was charged with 3rd offense operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a serious injury accident, no proof of insurance, failure to use seatbelt, and failure to maintain control relating to a Oct. 20 accident in rural Clayton County.
The Clayton County Sheriff's office responded to reports of a two-vehicle hit-and-run accident on Colesburg Rd. near 400th St. Following an investigation, officials say that Fangmann had rear-ended a vehicle driven by Steven Wiskus, of Colesburg, which caused the vehicle to run into the ditch and overturn.
Wiskus was taken to the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, and later flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with life-threatening injuries.
Sheriff's deputies discovered Fangmann laying in a ditch nearby on Osterdock Rd. to the north of the accident. Officials say he claimed he hit a deer that had disabled his vehicle, but through their investigation determined that Fangmann's vehicle was the one that left the scene of the accident. He sustained minor injuries and was treated and released at Guttenberg Municipal.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response to the crash. Fangmann is in custody at the Clayton County Jail.
