Former Hawkeye to Design CR Apartment Complex

The Cedar Rapids City Council has chosen a proposal for a five story multi-use building from former Hawkeye football player Nate Kaeding.

MW Properties, LLC proposed the building on Second Street Southwest between Second and Third Avenues in the Kingston Village area. Just to the south of this building is Dash Coffee Roasters. The building would have 45 apartments, each having a private balcony. There would also be a scenic rooftop patio. It would be a more than $6.3 million project. The company took into account that it is in the flood plain when designing the building.

The city was looking for a building that was financially viable based on current market conditions, that was no less than 3-stories and had a gathering space like a rooftop patio. The city received five proposals -- four were housing projects and one was a boutique hotel. A stakeholder panel reviewed these and recommended the MW Properties design.

District 5 Council Member Ashley Vanorny did note this plan does not have an affordable housing option.
