The Cedar Rapids School Board will discuss ways to update building security at its Monday night meeting.
The district is asking the board for more than $220,000 to pay for new door handles at several schools.
The list includes Roosevelt Middle School, and Arthur, Cleveland, Coolidge, Erskine, Garfield, Grant Wood, Hoover and Johnson Elementary Schools.
The new door handles feature a push-button lock that allows teachers to lock the doors from inside their classrooms.
So if an intruder enters the school, teachers can quickly lock their doors without having to go out into any hallways.
The school district added the handles in all the high school buildings last year.
