One Killed After Car in Pond Accident

CLERMONT, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- One person has died after a car went into the pond at Skip-A-Way RV Park Tuesday night.

Authorities responded to the single-vehicle accident at 9:06 p.m. and found a vehicle had gone into the 18-20 feet deep part of the pond.

Authorities say 30-year-old Steven Duane Baker Jr. from Elgin was driving his car in the campground when the car went out of control. Baker's vehicle then went through a chain fence before stopping in the pond.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found the vehicle submerged.

Rescue efforts were not successful and Baker was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident is still under investigation.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Clermont Fire Department, Decorah fire and water rescue, and Tri-State and Clermont Ambulance.
