Victim of CR Hit & Run Dies

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- The man pinned under a vehicle during a crash in a Cedar Rapids parking lot on August 16 has died.

Cedar Rapids police say they were notified Friday afternoon that 27-year-old Viken Wellman had died.

Officers were called to 1618 Park Towne Lane Northeast just before 11 p.m. August 16.

Witnesses tell police Wellman and his girlfriend confronted 19-year-old Daisha Van Pelt after Van Pelt backed into a parked vehicle. They say Wellman attempted to block Van Pelt from leaving when she drove forward, striking Wellman, pinning him under her vehicle.

Wellman was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment for life-threatening injuries.

Police say Van Pelt left the scene, but was later located. She is charged with failure to provide proof of financial liability and striking an unattended vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation and investigators are working with the Linn County Attorney's Office.
