INDEPENDENCE, Minn. -- University of Iowa junior Alex Schaake led the Hawkeyes on the first day of the Gopher Invitational on Sunday. Iowa finished the day in third place with a 36-hole score of 574 (+6) at the par-71 (7368 yards) Windsong Farm Golf Club.
No. 2 Oklahoma and 13th-ranked Texas are tied first with a two-round score of 569 (+1).
Schaake paced Iowa through two rounds with a score of 140 (-2). The junior moved up six spots to tie fifth heading in to Monday’s final round. The native of Omaha, Nebraska, finished the day with 12 birdies, including eight on the back nine.
Senior Matthew Walker and freshman Gonzalo Leal Montero each carded a 144 (+2), tying 16th. After finishing round one with an 18-hole score of 73 (+2), Walker shot an even par in round two to move up 14 spots on the leaderboard. Montero also surged 14 spots, firing six birdies in the second round, to finish the round with a score of 71 (E).
Junior Benton Weinberg and redshirt junior Alex Moorman are tied for 46th after two rounds with a score of 147 (+7). Moorman finished round one even with three birdies.
