Alliant Energy is activating a voluntary appliance cycling program to lower energy costs for customers.
The program was for July 12 and only includes customers north of Interstate 80 and south of Highway 20.
This volunteer program allows Alliant Energy to remotely sync air conditioners and electric water heaters across the state to reduce the number running at any one time.
Those participating will see air conditioners cycled in 15-minute intervals from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Blower fans will continue to circulate cooler air already in the home.
Cycling air conditioners will reduce peak demand, which will reduce the need to purchase higher-priced energy.
Customers who have enrolled their air conditioner in the program get a credit on their bill of $8 per month, and $2 per month for an electric water heater, from June through September, even if it doesn't get warm enough to cycle their appliances.
According to Alliant spokesman Justin Foss, the utility might do the recycling again today.
