Bicyclist Killed in Weekend Crash

Authorities have identified the 60-year-old man who died after crashing his bicycle in eastern Iowa.

The Linn County Sheriff's office says Charles Cephas Peal of Bertram, Iowa, died after the bicycle crash around 9 p.m. Friday.

Peal was riding down a steep hill when he fell off the bike. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators say the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Linn Country Sheriffs Office tells TV9 that a male has died after crashing his bicycle.

This was in the 400 block South Ely St. in Bertram.

Mount Vernon Fire Department, Area Ambulance, Linn County Deputies and Linn County Sheriff’s Rescue responded at 8:58 p.m. Friday.

In a release Sgt. Chad Watkinson said the rider attempted to go down a steep hill when he fell off his bicycle.

The sheriff's office says this caused him life threatening injuries.

He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and the sheriff's office believes no other vehicles or people were involved with the incident.

The male was transported to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The male’s name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of family.
