MADISON, Wisconsin – The 12th-seeded University of Iowa softball team saw its season come to an end Saturday morning when it fell 2-1 in extra innings to No. 4 seed Northwestern in quarterfinal action of the 2018 Big Ten Tournament.

Iowa jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior Angela Schmeiderer hit a RBI triple down the left field line. Senior Allie Wood, who had reached base on a walk, scored on Schmeiderer’s triple.

Northwestern tied the game in the second inning when a single through the right side plated Marissa Panko.

Allison Doocy and the Hawkeye defense kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard for five innings. Iowa stranded four Northwestern runners while Doocy (14-15) collected four strikeouts in the contest. The sophomore pitched all eight innings for the Hawkeyes and suffered the loss.

The Hawkeyes conclude the season with a 21-32 overall record and a 6-16 record in conference action.

QUOTING HEAD COACH MARLA LOOPER

“When you’re in championship play you know you might have to battle in extra innings and our team continued to fight all the way through. We started off hot and that was our plan. We wanted to go out and attack early.

“We had outstanding defense today. Aralee Bogar made a great diving play down the line. We took care of the ball and definitely gave ourselves a chance.

“This team continues to fight every day. They continue to prove why they’re wearing the black and gold and they’re proud of that.”
