Waukon Man Charged with 2nd Degree Murder

WAUKON, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Prosecutors have charged a Waukon man with second degree murder in the fatal shooting of his roommate, who was also his stepfather.

Police said 32-year-old John Michael Quanrude called them about 3:20 p.m. Monday, April 16, asking for immediate assistance for an accidental shooting at the Parkview Trailer Court in Waukon.

Officers found 60-year-old Dean Russell lying face down on the floor with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police said Quanrude told them he had fired a "warning shot" and then fired a second shot that hit Russell in the chest. They said Quanrude initially misidentified the victim.

Authorities have not said what led to the shooting.

An ambulance took Russell to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy.

Quanrude made an initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon where a judge set bond at $100,000.

If convicted, Quanrude faces up to 50 years in prison.
