PRINCETON, N.J. – The No.11 University of Iowa rowing team raced against No. 4 Princeton and No. 6 Yale on Saturday at Princeton, New Jersey.
HOW IT HAPPENEDThe I Varsity Eight highlighted the results with an impressive victory over the Tigers and Bulldogs on the Lake Carnegie course. The Hawkeyes got off the line level with the traditionally fast-starting Princeton Varsity but started their surge before the first 500 meter mark. The lead grew gradually in the first half of the 2000 meter course with the Hawkeyescrossing the mid-way point two-thirds of length up on Princeton with Yale clinging to the Tigers stern. Princeton mounted a strong attack in the third 500 meters and were able to earn back a seat but the Hawkeyes responded immediately to stretch the lead out to three-quarters of a length over the Tigers as the crews crossed the 1500 meter mark. The final sprint saw Iowa squeeze out another quarter-length lead on Princeton to cross the line a full boat-length in front with Yale finishing nine seconds behind.
The II Varsity Eight came up short in another nail-biter on Lake Carnegie. The Hawkeyes got out to a slim lead off the start but Yale clawed back to be on terms as the two crews crossed the first 500 meter mark. Over the next 1250 meters, neither crew held more than a two meter lead at any point but as the crews entered the final 250 meter, Yale started a furious finishing sprint. They were rewarded with as much as a two-seat lead with 100 meter to go but the Hawkeyes wouldn’t go quietly. The final 100m meters saw the Hawkeyes mount their own final attack and at the line, the Hawkeyes came up a mere 0.6 seconds short with Princeton a full 10 seconds behind.
The I Varsity Four, II Varsity Four, and I Novice Eight crews fell to Yale and Princeton.

“The 1V has shown really good, steady pacing and hasn’t been phased by anything. The 2V has been in the fire two weeks in a row and, while they’ve come out on the wrong end of virtual photo finishes, they haven’t cracked at all. In fact, they’ve effectively attacked in the closing stages of both those races. Their timing was just a bit off so that they ran out of distance to finish the job.
