Hawkeyes in 11th After Day 1 at Duck Invitational

EUGENE, Oregon -- The University of Iowa men’s golf team is in 11th place in the Duck Invitational after day one with a 36-hole total of 595 (+27). Sophomore Alex Schaake fired the low Hawkeye score of the tournament with a second-round 72 at the par-71 Eugene Country Club.

Iowa was tied for seventh place with Pacific and San Diego State after round one at 12-over-par. Thanks to 10 birdies in the first nine holes of the second round, the Hawkeyes climbed seven spots at one point to hold a share of the lead. Iowa gave some strokes back on the challenging front nine but is only six strokes back from gaining four spots on the leaderboard.

Santa Clara is leading the tournament at 11-over-par, and Loyola Marymount’s Riley Elmes is atop the individual leaderboard at five-under-par.

Schaake shot a two-round 146 (+4; 74, 72) and currently sits in 17th place. Schaake’s seven birdies on the day were tied for the second most from an individual out of the 88 competitors.

Junior Matthew Walker had an up-and-down day to tie for 34th with a 36-hole score of 149 (+7; 73, 76). Walker had two birdies in each round.
