EUGENE, Oregon -- Freshman Jake Rowe had a bounce-back performance in the second and third rounds of the Duck Invitational to tie his career 54-hole low of 229. Rowe was slotted in the fifth spot of the Hawkeye lineup -- his first career appearance in the lineup. The University of Iowa men’s golf team carded a three-round total of 896 (+44; 296, 299, 301) to finish the tournament in 13th place.
The par-71 Eugene Country Club proved to be an unforgiving course as the tournament’s 18-hole scoring average was 74.93 in 259 rounds. Only one team, UAB, shot under par in the final round, while no team shot under par for the tournament. Only five out of 88 competitors finished the tournament under par.
No. 30 Oregon, the host of the tournament, and Liberty tied at 13-over-par to share the tournament title. Oregon’s Norman Xiong shot seven-under-par in round three to claim medalist honors by one stroke.
Sophomore Alex Schaake was on pace for back-to-back top-20 finishes, but a tough front nine was too much to overcome. Schaake was Iowa’s top individual finisher at nine-over-par (222) to tie for 31st.
Sophomore Benton Weinberg fired Iowa’s low score of the third round with a three-over-par, 74. Weinberg tied for 43rd after totaling a 54-hole score of 225 (+12; 74, 77, 74).
- Alex Schaake fired the low Hawkeye 18-hole score of 72 in the second round, followed by Walker’s 73 in the first round.
- Four of the 12 teams that finished above Iowa were ranked in the top-25 of Golfstat’s rankings.
Iowa takes a week off before returning to action in their lone home event, the Hawkeye Invitational, on April 14-15. Thirteen teams will join the Hawkeyes at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City. Iowa finished second in last year’s 14-team event.
