Hawkeyes Travel to Southern Utah on Friday

CEDAR CITY, Utah – The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team travels to Southern Utah on Friday. The meet is slated for 8 p.m. (CT) at the America First Event Center.

THE COMPETITION

Led by head coach Scott Bauman, Southern Utah holds an overall record of 3-5 and conference mark of 1-5. The Thunderbirds are ranked No. 34 nationally and No. 4 in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference. Nationally, the team is also ranked 22nd on vault (48.971 average) and floor (49.043), 31st on bars (48.761), and 47th on beam (48.396). Southern Utah returns 11 letterwinners off its 2017 squad, including sophomore Autumn Jorgensen, and welcomes ten newcomers.

 

LAST TIME OUT

Iowa earned a 195.775-194.825 victory over Ball State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 16. Four GymHawks earned five event titles and the team registered a season-high 49.000 on vault.

 

Junior Nicole Chow took home the first all-around title of her career with a career-high 39.250. Chow also won beam with a 9.850.

 

Junior Maria Ortiz placed first on vault with a season-high 9.850, while senior Melissa Zurawski earned the title on bars with a season-best 9.875. Senior Lanie Snyder also won her third floor title of the season with a season-high 9.900.

 

IN THE RANKINGS

Iowa is ranked No. 36 in the nation and sixth in the Big Ten Conference.

 

As a team, the GymHawks rank 26th on beam (48.804 average), 33rd on floor (48.886), 35th on vault (48.757), and 51st on bars (48.400).

 

Four Hawkeyes rank in the top 100 nationally in event standings:

All-Around: Sophomore Charlotte Sullivan ranks 84th (38.875) and junior Nicole Chow ranks 99th (38.806) in the all-around.

Beam: On beam, Chow ranks 33rd (9.850), senior Nikki Youd ranks 62nd (9.821), and Sullivan ranks 89th (9.796).

Floor: Senior Lanie Snyder stands at 95th (9.825) in floor standings.
