Hawkeyes Sweep Sunshine State Classic Series

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The University of Iowa posted a 4-1 win over Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at Osceola Heritage Park Stadium to complete the three-game weekend sweep at the Sunshine State Classic Series.

The win marks Iowa's first 3-0 start under head coach Rick Heller.

The Hawkeyes jumped out to an early lead, pushing across three runs in the first three innings. Junior Mitchell Boe got things started with a two-run double in the second and Iowa pushed its lead to 3-0 in the third on a Matt Hoeg sacrifice fly that plated Robert Neustrom.

Iowa pushed across its fourth run in the seventh when sophomore Grant Judkins drew a bases loaded walk.

That was more than enough for Iowa's pitching staff. Five Hawkeye hurlers limited Old Dominion to six hits, while fanning nine.

Junior Brady Schanuel allowed two hits and didn't surrender a run in 3 2/3 innings. He was removed with two outs in the fourth after reaching his predetermined pitch count.

Freshman Trenton Wallace gave up ODU's only run in the sixth on an RBI groundout before Grant Leonard, Cam Baumann, and Zach Daniels pitched the final 3 2/3, scattering three hits. Daniels went the final two innings to notch his first save of the season.

QUOTING HEAD COACH RICK HELLER

“I’m happy with our guys. It’s day three of our trip and we came out with a lot of energy. Brady Schanuel gave us a great start, worked out of a jam in the first inning. Defensively, we made a couple miss cues, but for the most part, I thought our guys were dialed in. Offensively, Mitchell Boe had a big hit to get us a couple runs and the lead.”

NOTABLES

- Iowa finished with 10 hits in the game with three Hawkeyes -- Lorenzo Elion (2-for-5, R, Kyle Crowl (2-fot-5, R), and Matt Hoeg (2-for-3, RBI, R) posting multi-hit games. Boe had two of Iowa's four RBIs.

- Three Iowa pitchers -- Schanuel, Wallace, and Baumann -- made their Hawkeye debuts.
