COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Iowa women's swimming and diving team sits in ninth place following day two of the Big Ten Championships at the McCorkle Aquatic Center.
The Hawkeyes have 158 points; Michigan is leading the team race with 430 points.
Iowa posted a eighth-place finish in the 400-medley relay to highlight the team's performance Thursday. The quartet of seniors Meghan Lavelle and Shea Hoyt, junior Kelly McNamara, and sophomore Hannah Burvill posted a time of 3:37.71 -- the third-best time in school history.
Individually, senior Mekenna Scheitlin swam to a 15th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. After qualifying for a second swim with a career-best time in the prelims, Scheitlin bested her time again, posting an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 22.77. It is third all-time in program history.
In the diving well, Iowa had three student-athletes finish in the top 23 to earn team points. Freshman Jayah Matthews (266.40) finished 18th, sophomore Thelma Strandberg was 20th (262.70), and junior Jacintha Thomas (253.10) was 23rd.
Day three begins with preliminary action in the 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke at 10 a.m. (CT) on Friday morning. Diving on the 3-meter will begin at 12 p.m.
