FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The University of Iowa track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Tyson Invitational and Iowa State Classic with a bevy of 4x400 meter relays, including two top-ten times in program history.
In the final race at the Tyson Invite, the women’s 4x400 meter relay team of senior Sommer Sharpe, junior Briana Guillory, senior Brittany Brown, and senior Sheridan Champe finished fourth overall in the event, but posted the second fastest time in indoor school history with a time of 3:34.34. That time is over two seconds faster than the third-ranked time and trails the 3:32.93 set in 2016.
On the men’s side, Iowa’s squad of sophomore Collin Hofacker, junior DeJuan Frye, freshman Bradford Garron, and junior Mar’yea Harris trailed in section two of the event, but two splits of 45.95 and 45.42 boosted Iowa to a second place finish in the section and third place finish overall with a time of 3:06.06. That time is second in school history.
At the Iowa State Classic, Iowa’s relay of freshmen Kylie Morken, Addie Swanson, and sophomore Mallory King and Tia Saunders placed third with a time of 3:50.25.
MYLENEK’S MILE
A week after senior Michael Melchert set the fourth fastest mile in school history (4:04.32), sophomore Nathan Mylenek ran 4:04.25 to leap Melchert and former Hawkeye Adam Jones in the record books. Mylenek only trails Ed DeLashmutt (4:04.91) and Jeff Thode (3:58.72).
TYSON INVITATIONAL
Junior Mar’yea Harris finishes third in the open 200 meters with a time of 21.34, tenth in school history, and freshman Bradford Garron finished fourth with a time of 21.38. Both are personal bests.
Sophomore Laulauga Tausaga finished runner-up in the shot put a day after finishing runner-up in the weight throw. Tausaga’s best mark was 16.51 meters (54 feet 2 inches).
Sophomore Akinshe Hill tied his collegiate best in the triple jump. He finished 11th in the event with a best jump of 14.74 meters (48 feet 4.5 inches).
Junior Briana Guillory tied her personal best in the 200 meters from a week ago with a 23.26. She placed fourth overall.
IOWA STATE CLASSIC
Sophomore Nolan Teubel set a personal best in the 800 meters at Iowa State (1:50.93).
Freshman Daniel Gaynes set a personal best in the 60 meters with a time of 7.12.
Freshman Kylie Morken recorded a new collegiate best in the 400 meters. She finished with a time of 56.76.
