Two Charged in Fayette Co. Cashing Phony Checks

FAYETTE COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- Two people have been arrested and charged after attempting to cash checks that had been canceled at a local bank.

On February 7, the Fayette County Sheriff's office arrested and charged Billie Jean Hageman, 18, and Charles Williams Evans, 43, with Conspiracy to Commit Theft in the 3rd Degree.

Both are from Cresco and were taken to the Fayette County Jail on a $2,000 bond each.

Evans was bonded out on February 7, but Hageman is still in jail.

Authorities say the banks did not cash the checks to complete the transaction.
