Michigan Rallies Past Iowa for 19-17 Win

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa wrestling team fell to No. 7 Michigan, 19-17, on Saturday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The fourth-ranked Hawkeyes won four of the dual’s first six matches, but the Wolverines won the final four to erase a 17-7 deficit and snap Iowa’s streak of nine straight wins in the series.

The Hawkeyes got wins from Spencer Lee, Vince Turk, Brandon Sorensen, and Alex Marinelli.

Lee opened the dual with a 15-0 technical fall at 125, and Sorensen recorded his fifth pin of the season at 149. He led 8-3 before securing the fall with six seconds left in the second period.

Lee won for the third straight time against a top 10 opponent. He turned a first-period takedown into three tilts and 12 nearfall points, and ended No. 9 Drew Mattin’s night with an escape to open the second.

Turk and Marinelli both won by decision. Turk worked overtime to earn his first Big Ten dual win, 13-11, at 141. Turk and Sal Profaci shared seven takedowns through the first seven minutes, but Turk got the eighth and decisive takedown 33 seconds into the first sudden-victory period.

Marinelli picked up his third win over a top 10 opponent. He scored a takedown nine seconds into the match and used a third-period escape to top No. 8 Logan Massa, 3-2, at 165.

Marinelli’s win gave Iowa a 17-7 lead in the team score, but Michigan won the final four matches by a combined seven points to end the dual on a 12-0 run.

QUOTING TOM BRANDS

“This is on us as coaches. I put it here first, I always have, I always will. The other part of it is, they have to figure it out. It’s not the end of the world, but it might be getting close. We are in the third week of January, so we are getting to where we have to figure it out.”
