Hiawatha PD Giving Money to Strangers

HIAWATHA, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- The Hiawatha Police Department was giving away money in December as part of an act of kindness.

On their Facebook page, Hiawatha Police Chief Dennis Marks said an anonymous donor in eastern Iowa funded the Secret Santa Program for the police department.

Through the program, each officer was given a $100 bill to give to people who may be going through a tough time or could benefit from the money.

After explaining the program to recipients, many of the people receiving the money couldn't believe what they were hearing.

"I spoke with several of my officers who did not realize they too would be affected. Witnessing the impact $100 can have on a single mother wondering how she was going to put presents under the tree was a powerful moment," Marks said in the post.

Marks said he was proud of his officers and their dedication to helping others who deserved some stress relief during the holiday season.
