Officer Attack at Ft. Madison Prison

FORT MADISON, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- An inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison assaulted a correctional officer Thursday, according to the Iowa Department of Corrections.

It happened about 2:45 p.m. Thursday as the officer was conducting a search of the inmate's cell. The inmate tried to hit the officer with closed fists. Another officer in the area assisted with taking control of the inmate.

Prison medical personnel treated the attacked officer for scratches and bruises before the officer returned to his post.

Officers took the inmate to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for further medical assistance.

The Department of Corrections has placed the penitentiary on "restricted movement" for the time being.
