Strong Start For Hawks Against Notre Dame/Illinois

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa swimming and diving team competed in five events Friday night against Notre Dame and Illinois at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.


The Hawkeyes won three out of the five events, although the only non-exhibition competition came in the diving well.


The relay team of Michal Brzus, Jack Smith, Will Scott, and Joe Myhre delivered Iowa its first victory of the night. The quartet touched in at 1:20.20 in the 200-free relay.

TOP PERFORMERSSophomore Steve Fiolic won his heat in the 100 IM, touching in at 52.28 and finished sixth overall in the event. Junior Kenneth Mende was the top finisher for the Hawkeyes in the event, touching in at 51.83 to finish third overall.

Senior Carly O’Brien won her heat in the 100 IM with a time of 57.65, while freshman Lexi Horner finished second in her heat to finish fourth and 13th overall, respectively.


In the diving well, freshman Anton Hoherz won the 3-meter springboard event, diving to a score of 366.20, while senior Matt Mauser finished third with a score of 338.60. On the women’s side freshman Jayah Mathews led the Hawkeyes finishing third off the 1-meter with a score of 274.00.


The Hawkeyes closed out the night with the 400-medley relay. The relay team of Meghan Lavelle, Shea Hoyt, Kelly McNamara, and Hannah Burvill touched in at 3:45.95 to win their heat, while the men’s quartet of Kenneth Mende, Daniel Swanepoel, Jerzy Twarowski, and Smith touched in at 3:17.51 to take the victory in the event.

UP NEXTThe Hawkeyes wrap up competition against Notre Dame and Illinois Saturday with the first event scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CT) at the CRWC Natatorium.
