CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - Some nuisance flurries or light snow will continue mainly in the western parts of our area into Thursday night. A dusting is possible, but most of us will avoid the snow completely since it’ll be pretty scattered. With temperatures once again dropping well below zero, wind chills should drop into the -10 to -20 degree range overnight through Friday morning.
The bitterly cold air remains through the first part of the weekend, with Saturday morning’s lows deep into the teens below zero. The long-lasting arctic airmass will finally retreat after that, although it’ll still have an effect on us after it leaves.
Because of the cold weather, the ground and pavement are also quite cold. As the air temperature warms Saturday night into Sunday morning, moisture will increase and may cause frost to form on the pavement. Slick roads are possible, especially bridges and overpasses.
We should also see a light wintry mix develop by Sunday afternoon. While it doesn’t look like it will amount to very much, some freezing rain and sleet are possible, along with chilly rain showers and wet snowflakes. Even a one-degree change could affect what type of precipitation is falling, and it may change back and forth between types a few times. Again, precipitation should be light, but even a small amount would cause some travel slow-downs.
