Hawkeyes Charge on Opening Day of Minnesota Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Iowa swim team completed five events in the opening session of the Minnesota Invitational Thursday night at the Jean Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

 

Multiple Hawkeyes posted career-best times. On the women’s side 11 career-bests were made -- 500-free (3), 200-IM (3), 50-free (5). On the men’s side, nine career-best were set --500 free (2), 200-IM (5), 50-free (2).

 

MEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

Sophomore Michael Tenney swam to a career-best 4:25.69 in the 500-free. The Chino Hills, California, native was Iowa’s top performer, touching in first in the 500-free. Ben Colin and Chris Dawson would also post season-bests in the event.

 

Michal Brzus, Jack Smith, Will Scott and Joseph Myhre touched in at 1:19.61 for a second-place finish in the 200-free relay. Smith also posted a runner-up finish in the 50-free (20.00), with Brzus, Myhre, and Scott finishing 3-4-5.

 

Kenneth Mende and Daniel Swanepoel would each mark career-bests in the 200-IM. Mende touched in at 1:48.14, while Swanepoel finished just behind Mende with a time of 1:49.01.

 

WOMEN’S HIGHLIGHTS

Mekenna Scheitlin, Sarah Schemmel, Meghan Lavelle, and Jo Jekel finished as the runner-up in the 200-free relay to open the invite. In the women’s 500-free, sophomore Hannah Burvill swam to a career-best 4:44.40, finishing third in the event. Allyssa Fluit touched in at 4:53.61 to also register a career-best. 

 

Freshman Kelsey Drake was Iowa’s top performer on the women’s side. She posted a career-best, finishing runner-up in the 200-IM with a time of 2:01.12 -- ranking third all-time in the UI record books.

 

Jo Jekel and Samantha Sauer each posted a career-best of 23.37 in the 50-free, before Lavelle, Hoyt, Scheitlin, and Burvill would take second in the 400-medley relay, touching in at 3:41.27.

 

UP NEXT

The Hawkeyes return to the pool for the second session of the Minnesota Invitational tomorrow morning. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. (CT), with finals following at 5 p.m.
