Iowa Celebrates Giving Tuesday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- While many are focused on the holiday shopping, today is a day focused on "giving back."

It's Giving Tuesday and it's celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to urge others to help out those in need.

In Cedar Rapids, Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity is asking for help so they can keep serving others.

That initiative also marks their 30th anniversary of helping meet housing needs for the community.

Habitat for Humanity works with their volunteers to fix up and build new homes for families.

And the money raised today will go to supporting projects like those.

"We've got a project right now that we're working to complete that we'll dedicate next Monday afternoon that we'll dedicate with Mayor Corbett that's called Sweet Home Cedar Rapids and so we are still finishing that project as we speak so the dollars that we raise will really be put to work almost immediately," says Jeff Capps Executive Director of Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity will be accepting donations as part of Giving Tuesday on their website and other social media sites like Facebook.

90% of the money will go to helping the community while t10% will help build homes overseas for those in need.

Their goal is to raise $10,000.
