Hawkeye Men's Golf

SKOKIE, Illinois -- The University of Iowa Men’s golf team is tied with Miami (Ohio) in second place at the Windon Memorial after posting a two-round 559 (-1; 276, 283). Twelve of the 15 teams finished 36-holes on the day while seven groups from three teams were unable to finish both rounds due to darkness.

Iowa is two strokes behind first-place Penn State, who carded a three-under-par 557 at the par-70 Evanston Golf Club.

Three Hawkeyes -- Alex Schaake, Matthew Walker, and Alex Moorman -- are in the top 10 after day one. Schaake recorded five birdies in the first round to tie a season-best 18-hole score of 68. A second round even-par 70 put Schaake into tie for third place with one round to play. Schaake’s 3.96 par-four average was tied for the second best in the 84-player field.

Walker is currently tied for sixth after firing a 36-hole score of 139 (-1; 68, 71). Walker’s 68 in the first round set an 18-hole season low. Walker bogeyed his first hole of the day, but then played 18 straight holes of bogey-free golf. Walker’s 28 pars on the day was second most from any golfer on the day.

Moorman, the Centerville native, improved on his individual performance at the Zach Johnson Invitational with a career-low 18-hole score of 67 (-3) in the first round. Moorman flirted with the tournament lead at the start of the second round, and finished day one tied for 6th place with a two-round 139 (-1; 67, 72). Moorman had a team-high eight birdies on the day, which tied for the tournament-most with five other golfers.

Freshman Jake Rowe competed as an individual for the second straight weekend. Rowe shot a seven-over-par 77 in the first round, and has three holes remaining in the second round.

HAWKEYES ON THE TEAM LEADERBOARD

After the first round Iowa was tied for second place with two other teams and was four strokes back of first-round leader Miami (Ohio). Eagles by Walker and Schaake on the par-five 503-yard sixth hole kept the Hawkeyes in contention for the final round. Schaake is one stroke back of the leader while Walker and Moorman are two strokes back. Five of the eight Hawkeye scores counted today were at or below par.

COACH STITH’S COMMENTS

“We were patient and stuck to our game plan. It’s good to have three players in the top 10, but we need a team performance to win tomorrow. Alex Moorman stepped up today. His 67 this morning was very good. When he’s confident he can play with anyone.”

MONDAY’S PAIRINGS

Round three will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. (CT). Pairings will be announced after the second round resumes Monday morning.
