Jewell Selected As Candidate for Senior CLASS Award

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa senior linebacker Josey Jewell was selected as a candidate for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award for his excellence in four areas: community, classroom, character, and competition, announced today.

The Senior CLASS (Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School) Award selected 30 senior student-athletes that, in addition to their successes on the field, have made a positive impact in and around their communities.

Jewell (6-foot-2, 236-pounds), a native of Decorah, Iowa, leads the Big Ten and ranks third in the nation with 60 tackles through five games. He has recorded 32 tackles over the last two weeks, twice matching his career-high with 16 vs. Penn State and 16 at Michigan State. Jewell has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice, Bednarik Award twice, Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week, Lott IMPACT, Walter Camp, and College Sports Madness Defensive Player of the Week through five games.

A list of 10 semifinalists will be announced midway through the regular season. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced in January, 2018, during the bowl season.

The Hawkeyes (3-2, 0-2) host Illinois (2-2, 0-1) Saturday on Homecoming.  Kickoff is at 11:01 a.m. CT.  The game is televised on BTN. Live stats and a live stream of the game are available on hawkeyesports.com.
