IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa head men's gymnastics coach JD Reive announced the 2017-18 schedule Thursday. The schedule features four home meets and a matchup against the three-time defending national champion, Oklahoma. “The schedule is great. I like the teams that we’re visiting,” said Reive. “We’re hitting the top teams. We’re visiting Oklahoma which is always an experience. We’ve got Air Force on our schedule and they’ve been doing very well these last couple of years. I’m excited to have them out to Iowa City with Minnesota. Our Big Ten docket is incredibly competitive. It’s going to be a good battle this year.”
Iowa kicks off the season with three meets on the road, starting with the Windy City Invitational on Jan. 13. The Hawkeyes open their home slate against Illinois on Feb. 3. Iowa faces six teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament last year, including Nebraska, Penn State, and Minnesota and Air Force at home.
“We have four total home meets which is fantastic because we have more opportunities to show the fans what we’re doing,” said Reive. “Having them later in the season is nice so we are hitting the peak phase of our training when we’re home in Carver. The weather is warming up a bit, it’s hitting spring time, and having those consecutive events leading into the postseason at home is going to be a really good run for us.”
The Big Ten Championship is set for April 6-7 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, followed by the NCAA Championship on April 20-21 in Chicago.
“The highlight of the schedule is the NCAA Championship in Chicago,” said Reive. “We have the best fans in the country and we are awfully close to where the NCAA Championships are going to be. We start our season at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago and we finish it at UIC as well. I’m excited for this season. I really like this group. It’s going to be a good year.”
