WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- A plan to deploy potentially hundreds of public safety cameras throughout Waterloo could be five years away.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that police and traffic officials are urging patients as they put the system together.
Police Chief Dan Trelka says his goal is to have a network of cameras that police can easily access on a computer.
Council members have been discussing how to pay for and create a program that would place cameras in neighborhoods with high crime rates to help police investigations. The program needs both cameras and the infrastructure to transmit and save the videos in a location accessible to law enforcement.
The city currently has about six "pole cameras" police can move to criminal hot spots.
