Honor Flight Heading Out This Morning

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- On Tuesday, April 19, 89 veterans will take off from the Eastern Iowa Airport on flight #29 to visit D.C. and the monuments dedicated in their honor.

After their morning flight, they will get to visit the WWII, Korean, Vietnam memorials and the Arlington National Cemetery.

During the trip, they will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arlington Cemetery.

There is one WWII veteran on Flight #29, 29 Korean War veterans and 59 Vietnam veterans who will be boarding the plane for the third honor flight of 2017.

The veterans will depart for D.C. at 6:30 a.m. and will return to the Eastern Iowa Airport at 10:15 p.m.

The community is invited to come out and share in a special “welcome home ceremony,” when the veterans arrive at the airport. Staff with the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight say is important to have the ceremony since many veterans never received the welcome home they deserved when they returned from their service.

The event is free and open to the public and free parking will be provided at the Eastern Iowa Airport.
