IOWA CITY, Iowa - - University of Iowa sophomore quarterback Nate Stanley was named to the Davey O’Brien “Great 8” list following Iowa’s 44-41 overtime win at Iowa State Saturday.
Stantley joins a list of Sam Darnold (USC), Justin Herbert (Oregon), Lamar Jackson (Louisville), Daniel Jones (Duke), Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), Shane Morris (Central Michigan), and Brent Stockstill (Middle Tennesee).
Stanley (6-foot-5, 235-pounds), a native of Menomonie, Wisconsin, completed 27-of-41 pass attempts for 333 yards and five touchdowns, with no interceptions. Stanley’s scoring passes covered 10, 17, 15, 46 and 5 yards, as nine Hawkeyes had at least one reception. His 333 passing yards tie as the 24th best single game total in school history.
Stanley led the Iowa offense on four scoring drives of at least 89 yards. Iowa’s final scoring drive in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter covered 89 yards in just seven plays as the Hawkeyes tied the game with 1:52 remaining. Stanley then completed 2-of-3 passes for 15 yards in overtime, including the game-winning touchdown after Iowa State had scored a field goal on its overtime possession.
Stanley established career highs in completions (27), attempts (41), yards (333), and touchdowns (5). He has eight touchdown passes in his first two career starts, more than any other quarterback in the Kirk Ferentz era. Stanley leads the Big Ten and is tied for third nationally in scoring passes. Stanley is the first Iowa quarterback with 300-plus passing yards and five-plus touchdown passes since Chuck Hartlieb versus Northwestern in 1987.
Stanley is only the second Big Ten quarterback in the last 20 years with 300-plus passing yards, five-plus touchdown passes and no interceptions in a road game.
Stanley was also named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week and was one of eight quarterbacks named a Manning Award “Star of the Week.”
The Hawkeyes (2-0) host North Texas (1-1) on Saturday (2:30 p.m., ESPN2) in their final nonconference contest.
