A Grimes man who shot at Cedar Rapids police, then barricaded himself inside an apartment for 11 hours is sentenced to 50 years in prison without parole.
Christopher Kern pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer earlier this month.
In February, police tried to serve Kern with an arrest warrant for allegedly stealing his dog from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in Des Moines. That's when he opened fire on officers, leading to the standoff.
Kern is also accused of attacking a Linn County Sheriff’s deputy while leaving a dental appointment last month.
