The Linn County Attorney is ruling that Cedar Rapids Police officers were justified in the use of deadly force during a lengthy standoff earlier this year.
Christopher Kern of Grimes shot at officers with a rifle twice inside the Chelsea Apartments in Cedar Rapids in February, leading police to return fire.
He then barricaded himself inside an apartment for nearly 11 hours before he was taken into custody. Kern pleaded guilty on three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer last week.
County Attorney Nick Maybanks says criminal charges against the officers are not warranted, and the actions taken by police were to save their own lives and protect the community.
