Numerous UI Fraternities Penalized on Alcohol Charges

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - On Wednesday, the University of Iowa announced that nine fraternities had been placed on temporary suspension due to policy violations involving alcohol.

In an email sent out by Vice President for Student Life Melissa Shivers the university said the fraternities were placed on suspension pending the outcome of investigations into "multiple violations of university policy and the Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) moratorium".

The following organizations have been temporarily suspended pending an investigation:
• Pi Kappa Alpha
• Beta Theta Pi
• Pi Kappa Phi
• Acacia
• Sigma Pi
• Phi Delta Theta
• Sigma Phi Epsilon
• Sigma Alpha Epsilon
• Delta Chi

University officials said the violations involved alcohol use at open events, including tailgates, despite repeated attempts by the university to stop the behavior.

As a result of the temporary suspensions, chapters won't be allowed to participate in certain university events, including homecoming activities.
