ANKENY, Iowa (KWQC) - UPDATE 11:20 p.m. 9/16/2018: The former Clinton, Iowa man shot and killed by Ankeny, Iowa police is a convicted felon who has had run-ins with police in the past.
Christopher Leonard pleaded guilty to a felony charge for stabbing a man multiple times in 2011. That incident took place at his Clinton home in December of that year. When police confronted Leonard, he held a butcher knife in a threatening manner.
According to the TV6 archives, a standoff ensued and Leonard yelled at officers from inside the home. When Leonard came out, he continued to hold the butcher knife in a threatening manner. Officers used a stun gun on him.
Leonard was sentenced to 10-years in prison.
It is unclear when he was released from jail. Ankeny police say they will release more information on the case Monday.
ORIGINAL STORY: The family of a former Clinton, Iowa man say he was shot and killed by Ankeny, Iowa police Saturday.
The family of Chris Leonard, tells TV6 he was visiting the Ankeny area from his new home in Missouri at the time of the incident.
According to police, who have not confirmed Leonard as the victim, they were called to a gas station around 4:30 Saturday afternoon for an armed robbery. Police say they located the suspect near another business a short time later. The suspect pointed a gun at officers who then shot and killed the suspect.
A firearm was found at the scene. Ankeny Police have not identified the officers involved in the shooting.
Leonard’s family say he was a father of four.
