IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) -- A Johnson County District Court judge has ruled the University of Iowa must pay nearly $21.5 million, plus interest, to Modern Piping Inc. for work done on the new Hancher Auditorium and the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
Judge Ian Thornhill made the decision earlier this week after the Board of Regents attempted to have an arbitrator's decision overturned in court.
The lawsuit cites design changes, miscommunication, missed deadlines, and budget overruns as reasons the two sides disagreed.
The children's hospital project was originally estimated to cost $270.8 million but ended up costing over $360 million and was delayed by months.
The university was also ordered to pay arbitration and court costs.
