Storms this morning, Strong storms Tonight

Despite calm and mild weather conditions the last few days, a scenario is setting up that could lead to strong, even severe storms, this evening into tonight.

Rain should clear out of most of Eastern Iowa by late this morning allowing for conditions to set up for storms later today.

“There should be a long enough break after this morning’s rain to allow the atmosphere to reset,” said KCRG-TV9 Meteorologist Kaj O’Mara.

“The break in rain will allow for things to come together and create a conditions favorable for strong storms. Some could become severe.”

O’Mara said the strongest storms could impact Eastern Iowa late in the afternoon said all types of severe weather are possible: hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out.

“Tonight’s storms look to come through just as high school football games will be taking place. Coaches, parents, fans and schools need to keep a close eye on conditions and be prepared to take action in the event severe weather approaches,” O’Mara added.

“Several school districts have moved up kickoff times for tonight’s games because of the threat of severe weather,” according to Scott Saville, KCRG-TV9’s sports director.

Following Friday’s storms, warm and humid conditions are expected this weekend into early next week.
