Tipton Woman Charged in West Liberty Cold Case

TIPTON, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) — A Cedar County woman is charged with the 1992 murder of a man near West Liberty.

The Muscatine County Attorney has charged 55-year-old Annette Cahill with first degree murder for the death of Corey Wieneke.

Wieneke's fiance found him dead on his bedroom floor inside West Liberty home on October 13, 1992. An autopsy determined he died from blunt force trauma. Agents with the Division of Criminal Investigation determined an aluminum baseball bat found one mile from Wieneke's home was the murder weapon.

Investigators said Cahill had previously been in a sexual relationship with Wieneke, provided conflicting reports of her whereabouts the day of the murder, and mentioned Wieneke was struck with a baseball bat before police had identified the weapon. They said they believe Cahill and Wieneke were in a heated argument about his involvement with another woman.

Police have not yet announced a motive for the murder.

Cahill is in the Muscatine County Jail on $1-million bond. If convicted, she faces life in prison.
