Rep. Chris Collins Suspends Re-election Campaign Following Indictment

Rep. Chris Collins Holds A Press conference

Congressman Chris Collins (R-NY) announced that he is suspending his re-election campaign on Saturday (August 11). Collins was indicted earlier in the week on charges of insider trading. Prosecutors alleged that he received nonpublic information after a drug being developed by an Australian biotech company failed its tests and passed that information along to his son.

Collins called the charges "meritless" and initially vowed to stay in the campaign. The New York Republican issued a statement explaining that "after extensive discussions with my family and my friends over the last few days," he decided to end his bid for re-election.

He said that he plans to fill out the remainder of his term and "support President Trump's agenda."
