Video Shows Border Patrol Vehicle Hitting Man, Then Driving Away

A Border Patrol vehicle was apparently caught on camera striking a Native American man and then driving away the New York Times reports

The man recording the video on his phone, identified as Paulo Remes, can be seen approaching the SUV on a dirt road in the Tohono O'odham Nation, located about 60 miles southwest of Tuscon, Arizona. But instead of slowing down or even stopping, the Border Patrol vehicle knocks him over.

Remes can be heard exclaiming on the video, "They just ran me over bro," as he tries to take down the license plate of the vehicle that just hit him. According to the Arizona Daily Star, Remes was taken to the hospital to get checked out, but he says he feels all right.

"I'm just a little sore, really," he said.

The 34-year-old Remes says when he noticed the SUV, he had a feeling he knew what would happen.

"I ran into the dirt road in front of my house, because I know they’ll try and hit me," says Remes. "I think he saw me on the landline and didn’t think I was recording."

Tensions have been high between residents who live near the border and federal authorities. The United States Border Patrol said in a statement that they were "actively investigating" and that they "do not tolerate misconduct on or off duty and will fully cooperate with all investigations of alleged unlawful conduct by our personnel," the Border Patrol said.
