(Peosta, IA) -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a fish kill in Dubuque County.

The DNR says it received reports of a possible manure release and dead fish in a tributary of the Little Maquoketa River north of Peosta (pee-AH-stuh) on October 1st. When DNR staff arrived, they found dead fish and murky water conditions. The DNR says it has identified manure runoff from an animal feeding operation nearby and recommends water users downstream avoid using water from the Little Maquoketa River at this time.

Cleanup efforts are under way.
