(Iowa) -- Five new Iowa counties will participate in the High Face Rural Traffic Safety Project.

The Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau says over the next three years, it will be partnering with local law enforcement in Clinton, Mills, Sioux, Warren, and Winneshiek counties on efforts to increase seatbelt use and reduce the number of traffic deaths. The three-year initiative will combine education, education, and engineering strategies in each county, based on the specific needs of each.

The Iowa State University Institute for Transportation identified these five counties as high-priorities after examining data on crashes in rural communities that experience above-average unprotected traffic deaths and serious injuries. Data analysis concluded that GTSB resources would make the most difference in these five particular counties.

The project is part of Iowa's overall strategy for reducing traffic deaths and injuries. Iowa reported an historic low of 259 traffic deaths in 2025.
