(Des Moines, IA) -- A Western Iowa farmer has been tapped as the running mate by the Democratic nominee for Iowa Governor.
Rob Sand has announced Crawford County Supervisor Dave Muhlbauer is joining the ticket for Lieutenant Governor.
"It's somebody I knew I could trust that was the same person every day. The same person you were talking to a year ago. And it was a short number of people that made the short list, " Sand said at a rally for supporters in Des Moines on Sunday.
Muhlbauer's father and grandfather served as state representatives in the Iowa House. He's a fifth generation farmer.
Sand was joined at Sunday's rally by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who is also president of the Democratic Governor's Association. The Iowa GOP claims Sand's associations with fellow Democrats prove he's not independent.
"What's interesting about this campaign that the Iowa GOP doesn't want to tell people is that we have three times as many Republican donors as Zach Lahn. People are sick of the two-party choice system and they're sick of a one-party control in Iowa. And that's why we have so much support from independent candidates," Sand added.
The current Iowa State Auditor faces Republican nominee Zach Lahn in the November General Election. Lahn secured an upset victory in the GOP Primary when Trump-endorsed, Randy Feenstra conceded last week.
The Iowa GOP says there's no way Sand and Muhlbauer can win given there are 200-thousand more registered Republicans in the state.
But Sand says every year, Iowans vote for Donald Trump and they vote for him because they know him.
