(Des Moines, IA) -- Hy-Vee continued its long-standing tradition of honoring those who served by hosting its annual Veterans Day Breakfast today. From 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., veterans and their families were invited to any Hy-Vee location for a complimentary hot meal—a tradition that began in 1999.

“You get a sense of American pride when you walk through the doors right now,” said Jeff Mallory, Store Director at the Waukee Hy-Vee. “There’s this feeling of love, passion, and caring. Going into this time of year, I think you’ll see that carry through the rest of the community. People just want to help each other, and Veterans Day is a big part of that.”

The Waukee store added special touches to the celebration, including a map where veterans could mark places they’ve served and a table honoring fallen soldiers. Mallory says the Waukee location served around 600 free meals this morning.

In addition to the breakfast, veterans will receive 15% off their groceries at Hy-Vee for the rest of the day.
