Man Gets One Year In Jail For Hosting Parties In Violation Of COVID Rules

A Maryland man was sentenced to one year behind bars for hosting two large parties at his house in defiance of coronavirus restrictions. On March 22, police were called to the Hughesville home of Shawn Marshall Myers and found more than 50 people inside. Officers said the partied violated an executive order by Governor Larry Hogan and ordered everybody to leave.

After arguing with the officers, Myers eventually agreed to disband the party, and all of his guests left without incident.

Five days later, on March 27, officers were called back to Myers' home and found another party with about 50 attendees. Myers refused to end the party and told his guests to ignore the orders of the police. Police took him into custody and broke up the party.

"Officers told Myers to disband the party, but again he was argumentative claiming he and his guests had the right to congregate," the State's Attorney said. "Beyond being argumentative, Myers directed his guests to stay in defiance of Governor Hogan's Orders and the officers' lawful orders to disband the party."

He was found guilty of two counts of failing to comply with an executive order. In addition to one year in jail, Myers was also fined $5,000 and will be on supervised probation for three years after he is released.
