Iowa Corrections Department Reports COVID-19 Death of Fort Dodge Inmate

IOWA CITY, Iowa - An inmate from Fort Dodge Correctional Facility is dead from COVID-19.

Seventy-one year-old Ray Allen Vanlengen died after being taken to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City Monday over the seriousness of his illness. His death is linked to COVID-19 and multiple preexisting medical conditions.

Vanlengen had been serving a 100-year maximum sentence for four convictions of Sexual Abuse 2nd Degree in Black Hawk County.

The Department of Corrections website now shows 61 positive COVID-19 tests at the Fort Dodge prison, after the department reported 39 cases there as of Monday. The first case at the prison was reported in late June.

Vanlengen's sentence began on December 1, 1995, and his tentative discharge date would have been January 17, 2039. The Johnson County Medical Examiner has conducted their review; an autopsy will not be performed.
