New Projections Show Iowa With Far Fewer Deaths From COVID-19

SEATTLE, Washington - A University of Washington Study that was dismissed as unreliable by the Iowa Department of Public Health now shows the state's peak for the COVID-19 outbreak is 20 days away.

The study now projects 17 deaths on April 26th, for a total of 420 in late May, which is down from its previous estimate of 1,500 by August.

It shows Iowa will have enough beds as well as ICU beds and ventilators to handle the peak.

The state health department rejected previous projections from the University of Washington because they did not figure in the closure of schools on March 15th.

The study does note Iowa has not issued a stay at home order.

The study from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in Seattle was updated Sunday.
