Public service for Iowa Chief Justice Cady Wednesday

DES MOINES, Iowa - A public service will be held for Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady Wednesday.

Cady died of a heart attack while walking his dog in Des Moines Friday night. He was 66.

The public service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Knapp Center on the Drake University campus, 2601 Forest Avenue.

"Members of the public are invited to honor Chief Justice Cady for the significant contributions he made to the Iowa Judicial Branch and judicial independence," said a statement by the Iowa Judicial Branch.

Members of the Cady family will greet the public after the service. A private family service will be held at another time.

Cady was a graduate of Drake University in 1975. He received a Doctor of Jurisprudence (also known as a Juris Doctor or JD) from the university in 1978.

The school released a statement honoring Cady Saturday.

“Chief Justice Cady was an exceptional jurist and, more importantly, just a wonderful human being,” said Drake Law School Dean Jerry Anderson. “I admired him so much, because his constant goal was to do the right thing to achieve a fairer legal system in Iowa—not the easy thing, but the right thing. The State of Iowa owes him a deep debt of gratitude for his tireless efforts to improve the law and the judicial system, making the lives of all Iowans better.”
